No. 19 Southern Maine Storms Past MIT

CHANDLER, Ariz. - MIT's diamond program opened its spring break with a 25-12 loss to the nationally-ranked Huskies of Southern Maine on Monday. The Engineers swung the bats really well, but after a four-game homestand over the weekend, the Cardinal and Gray relied on untested arms to handle the pitching duties. A few of MIT's rookies enjoyed a stellar day. Hours after being named NEWMAC Player of the Week, rookie Brian Doyle finished 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Doyle plated two runs with a triple in the MIT fifth. First-year lead-off hitter Ryne Barry also tagged the ball well, securing a single, triple and homerun to finish 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. In addition to Doyle, Stewart Park and Thomas Phillips also drove home three runs. Phillips delivered a two-run opposite field homerun in the first while Park had a monster day that included four hits and three stolen bases. Freshman Dan Hyatt picked up two runs batted in despite not gaining a hit and senior Matthew Harrington finished 3-for-3 with a run after entering the game as a pinch hitter. Adam Lamson made his college debut against the Huskies as a reliever in the fourth. Throwing four complete innings, Lamson scattered six hits and gave up three earned runs. |
