MIT Freshman Finish Season with Strong Showing at the Foot of the Charles

Nov. 17, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT freshman heavyweight men stayed at home on the Charles River to race in the Foot of the Charles on Saturday. The Foot includes competition from institutions on the Charles River as well as numerous EARC schools.

On a beautiful, but windy day, the freshman men took to the water for their last race of the fall season. The wind made things difficult, but the Engineers handled it well. The `A' boat had a good battle with Syracuse down most of the course, while the MIT `B' boat was able to move continuously on the U.S. Military Academy.

In the end, Tech `A' finished ninth overall out of 30 teams, while MIT `B' finished 21st. The `A' boat was able to finish ahead of the top boats from Boston University, University of New Hampshire, U.S. Military Academy and Boston College. The `B' boat finished ahead of Dartmouth and Boston College.

"It was a cold and windy day, but we were able to row a mature race." commented seven seat Lucas Goodman. "As always, there were things to work on, but it was a good way to end the fall season."

"The high winds made it a pretty tough day to row well." remarked freshman coach Evan Thews-Wassell. "But I think we handled the conditions as well as we could have for the relatively inexperienced team. These results give us confidence going into the winter training season."

The Engineers will spend their winter break training in Cocoa Beach Florida, and start the spring season April 5th against Columbia University.
