Feb. 23, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A season-high team score of 322.70 wasn't enough for MIT's men's gymnastics team to overcome Division I power The College of William and Mary on Saturday afternoon, as the visiting Tribe racked up an impressive score of 341.15 en route to victory in the duPont Gymnasium. No. 14 William and Mary improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Engineers fell to 0-4. Senior Joshua Coblenz earned a share of first-place in the all-around competition by tallying a season-high mark of 81.10, matching the score of William and Mary's Derek Gygax. MIT junior Boris Rasin wasn't far behind, earning a mark of 81.70, another personal season-best. Tom Caldwell (79.45) and Jake Shapiro (79.20) also competed in the all-around for the Cardinal and Gray, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Coblenz was tops for MIT on the floor exercise (13.70, sixth-place), pommel horse (13.20, fifth-place), vault (14.20, seventh-place) and parallel bars (13.80, fifth-place). Shapiro had Tech's highest score on the still rings, earning a mark of 14.60 to garner runner-up honors in the event and provide MIT's best overall finish on any individual apparatus. The freshman from Canton, Mass., also tied Coblenz for the Engineers' highest tally on the vault (14.20). Meanwhile, Caldwell's 13.55 on the high bar was the Cardinal and Gray's best in that event. MIT won't be back in action until Sunday, Mar. 16, when it will travel to Springfield, Mass., to take on host Springfield College and fellow visitor Army. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. |
