Men's Gymnastics Notches Runner-Up Finish at New England Invitational Championships
March 5, 2007
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Boris Rasin and senior Brad Sutton secured the top two spots in the all-around competition to help the Engineers to a runner-up finish at this past weekend's New England Invitational Championships, hosted by Springfield College in Blake Arena. The host won the event with a score of 186.550, while MIT (181.900) and James Madison University (164.900) rounded out the top three. Also competing with incomplete teams were defending champion Temple University (129.350), University of Vermont (123.850) and USA Gymnastics (64.800). Individuals representing SUNY-Brockport and a number of other clubs also took part in the invitational. Rasin grabbed the all-around crown for the second straight competition with a season-high score of 47.500 - more than two full points higher than teammate and second-place finisher Sutton, who amassed a 45.450. The Engineers picked up individual victories in two events, as Rasin was tops among all competitors in the still rings (8.650) and fellow sophomore Tom Caldwell won the high bar with a point-total of 8.250. Junior Josh Coblenz notched the Cardinal and Gray's best score in floor exercise with an 8.000, which was good enough for second-place in the event. Meanwhile, Sutton was the best Engineer in pommel horse (8.400), vault (7.300) and parallel bars (8.250). Gym and More's R.J. Heflin was impressive, winning the floor exercise (8.950), pommel horse (9.200) and parallel bars (9.000). MIT will return to Springfield and Blake Arena on Sunday, Mar. 11, when it will compete in a tri-meet against the host Pride and fellow visitor, College of William and Mary. The meet is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. |
