MIT Drops Pair in Weekend Tri-Meet

March 12, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The College of William & Mary freshman Derek Gygax captured first-place in the all-around competition to lead the Tribe to a pair of victories over Springfield College and MIT in a tri-meet this past weekend at Springfield's Blake Arena. No. 15-ranked William & Mary took top honors with a season-high 203.550 points, well ahead of Springfield (186.100) and MIT (182.450).

With the pair of losses, the Engineers dropped to 0-5 in dual-meet action this season. The Tribe improved to 9-6 with the two victories, while the Pride moved to 2-3 with the split.

Gygax grabbed the top spot in the all-around with a score of 48.150, while a pair of Engineers - senior Brad Sutton and junior Joshua Coblenz - finished 2-3, respectively. Sutton tallied 46.400 points to earn runner-up honors, while Coblenz rounded out the top three with a 44.800.

William & Mary displayed its class, dominating the floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar as a team, on its way to capturing the top four spots in every one of those events. Sloan Crawford picked up the wins in floor exercise and high bar, while Aaron Ingram (pommel horse), James Prim (still rings), David Locke (vault) and Andrew Hunt (parallel bars) rounded out the Tribe's sweep of first-place finishes.

Sutton was the only Tech gymnast to appear in the top-six in two different events, as he tied for fourth on the pommel horse (8.450) and finished fifth on the parallel bars (8.250).

Sophomore Boris Rasin performed well on the still rings, earning an 8.500 and a fifth-place finish in the event.

The men's gymnastics team will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 17, when it will travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army at 1:00 p.m.
