Men's Gymnastics Places Fifth at USAG Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The College of William and Mary's 14th-ranked men's gymnastics team won its seventh consecutive USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Team Championship on Saturday afternoon, edging out runner-up Navy by a score of 199.850-198.000. MIT finished fifth out of the six varsity squads attending the competition. The victory for the Tribe was its 12th since first competing in the event in 1994. Air Force placed third amongst varsity squads with a point total of 191.300, while Springfield College (179.750), MIT (176.850) and James Madison University (160.450) rounded out the division. A second division of club teams competed, with Arizona State (175.600) taking the victory over the University of Texas (159.450) and the University of Washington (61.450). Sophomore Boris Rasin was the Cardinal and Gray's top all-around performer, as he tied for fourth with a 45.900. He was closely followed by junior Josh Coblenz in sixth (44.400), senior Brad Sutton in a tie for seventh (43.850) and sophomore Tom Caldwell in 13th (40.800). In terms of individual events on Saturday afternoon, Sutton put forth Tech's top finish with a seventh-place showing on the pommel horse with a score of 7.650. Rasin tied for eighth on the parallel bars (7.800), tied for ninth on the rings (7.950) and tied for 10th on the floor exercise (8.250) while Caldwell tied for 10th on the high bar (8.000) and Coblenz tied for 15th on the vault (7.400). The individual event finals took place on Saturday afternoon, with four Engineers taking part in the festivities. It was once again Sutton who provided MIT's highest finish, placing in a tie for fourth on the pommel horse with a score of 7.600. Rasin finished fifth on the parallel bars (7.750) and sixth on the rings (8.450), while Caldwell placed seventh on the high bar (7.550). MIT's men's gymnastics team will complete its season on Friday, Mar. 30, when it will compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. |
