Engineers Shut Out Daniel Webster, 7-0

Jan. 24, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A season-high 17 Engineers recorded at least one point and freshman goaltender Stephen Yablonski earned the first shutout of his intercollegiate career, as MIT defeated Daniel Webster College, 7-0, on Wednesday night at the Johnson Ice Rink. The Cardinal and Gray's balanced scoring attack was highlighted by seven different goal-scorers, including rookies Vladimir Sobes and Riley Brandt, who each notched the first goal of their intercollegiate careers.

MIT improved its record to 9-1-0 with the win, while the defending NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association Conference B Champion Eagles fell to 3-11-1.

Rookie defenseman Sobes made his first intercollegiate marker an important one, as he opened the scoring with what proved to be the game-winner less than two minutes into the contest. The Canadian blue-liner finished off assists from Bill Near and Ian Rousseau to put the Engineers on top, 1-0. Fellow defenseman Steve Payne made it 2-0 at 10:08 of the opening frame with assists credited to Mike Kozlowski and Justin Myers.

Brandt scored the only goal of the second period at 7:15 with help from Sobes and graduate student Paul Puskarich, before a four-goal outburst in the third period sealed the victory for the Engineers.

Junior Ryan Ballentine extended MIT's lead to 4-0 with 12:32 remaining in the contest, as he finished off a feed from Joseph Fahey with a secondary assist credited to Nick LaBounty. It was Ballentine's sixth goal of the season to go along with a team-leading 17 assists, giving him a total of 23 points. He trails only LaBounty - who has notched 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points - on the Tech scoring charts.

The Engineers capitalized on a two-man advantage to make it 5-0 at 10:02, as Eddie Sturm and Near assisted Dustin Kendrick's second goal of the season. Chris Bukowski (from Sobes and Michael Rosensweig) and Cory Phinney (from Nicholas Maietta and Puskarich) scored late goals to provide the final 7-0 score-line.

Yablonski stopped all 22 Daniel Webster shots en route to earning the shutout, while lowering his goals-against-average to 1.36 in the process. Eagles net-minder Chris Cloutier made 39 saves in a valiant effort despite taking the loss.

The Engineers will return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they will travel to Burlington, Vt., to take on the University of Vermont at 1:15 p.m. Daniel Webster will also be on the road for its next contest, as it will compete at Springfield College on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:50 p.m.
