Eight Unanswered Goals Push MIT Past UConn, 8-3
Feb. 12, 2006
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The men's hockey team (9-2-5) erased an early 2-0 deficit and then ran off eight unanswered goals en route to an 8-3 victory over the University of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. The win prolonged MIT's unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3). Senior forward Adam Shabshelowitz and junior defenseman Nicholas Maietta each tallied five points to lead the Engineers. With no score over six minutes into the first period, UConn's Matt Walter assisted on back to back goals thirteen seconds apart at 13:28 and 13:15. Scott Hung scored the first and Phil Kucha put home the second to give the Huskies a sudden two goal advantage. The Engineers continued to hustle, and the Huskies took a hooking penalty at 12:53. On the ensuing power-play, Adam Shabshelowitz scored on a pass from Nicholas Maietta and freshman Nick LaBounty at 11:08. Again with a man advantage just a few minutes later, Maietta got a goal of his own to knot the game at 2-2. MIT carried the momentum into the second frame and grabbed their first lead of the game at 15:29. Sophomore Mike Kozlowski found Shabshelowitz, who tallied his second goal of the game. Then at 13:54, the Engineers added to their lead on the power-play when junior Brian LaCrosse's wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle was deflected past UConn goalie Matt Clements by Shabshelowitz. The goal was Shabshelowitz's third of the night and 13th of the season. The scoring didn't stop for the Engineers. Just over two minutes later, Maietta made a nice breakout pass to a streaking LaBounty on the leftwing. LaBounty then carried the puck into the offensive zone and fired a wrist shot on net. The initial shot was stopped by Clements, but LaCrosse was in front to put back the rebound for MIT's fifth goal. A careless "hit after the whistle" penalty at 7:08 on UConn's TJ Seifert gave MIT yet another opportunity to build on their lead. They did just that. Mike Kozlowski corralled the rebound of a LaBounty wrist shot and scored on a snap shot of his own at 6:27. Ahead 6-2 and in control of the game, MIT came out with more offense in the third session. At 13:39, Shabshelowitz found himself on the breakaway and faked to his left before sliding the puck in between the post and Clements' pads. Exactly one minute later, Nick LaBounty and Adam Shabshelowitz came down on a two on one. Shabshelowtiz's pass was in LaBounty's skates, but LaBounty managed to get the puck on his stick, spin around and beat Clements. The Huskies managed one more goal at 2:47 before the game ended 8-3 in favor of MIT. The Engineers scored four power-play goals and outshot UConn 43-29. They will look to stretch their unbeaten streak to double digits on Wednesday, February 15 when they host rival Bryant College. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. |
