MIT Clipped by Boston College, 4-2
Feb. 21, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT's men's ice hockey team rounded out its regular season schedule with a 4-2 loss to non-conference opponent Boston College on Wednesday night at the Johnson Ice Rink. Second-period goals from Justin Myers and Nick LaBounty gave the Engineers a brief 2-1 lead, but three unanswered goals by the Eagles allowed the visitors to escape with the victory. The game served as the final regular season contest of 2007-08 for the Cardinal and Gray (12-4-1; 8-2-0), which finished as NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA) Conference A East Division regular season champions. Boston College, which also saw its regular season come to a close on Wednesday evening, finished at 13-2-1 overall. Senior defenseman Andrew Baird opened the scoring for the Eagles at 10:05 of the first period with his team-leading 19th goal of the season, with Joe Ehiorobo and Kevin Boudreau providing the assists. The score remained 1-0 through the first 13 minutes of the second period, but a hectic four-minute stretch towards the end of the stanza turned the game on its head. Myers brought the Engineers level with the fourth goal of his rookie season at 6:45 before Mike Kozlowski and Kevin Farino set up LaBounty for his team-best 21st goal on the power-play just over one minute later. Ian Rousseau and Farino grabbed the assists on Myers' goal. MIT went back on the man-advantage almost immediately with an aim at increasing its one-goal lead, but Boston College's Steve Osipow reversed Tech's fortune by scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal to knot the score at 2-2 with 3:19 remaining in the second. Less than one minute later, the Eagles were at it again, scoring what proved to be the game-winner through sophomore forward Grayson Heenan. He was assisted by Derek Summerlin and Ehiorobo. The Engineers were thwarted in their attempt to even the score in the third period, while an Ehiorobo goal (from Heenan and Baird) with 9:01 on the clock gave Boston College a 4-2 lead and some much needed breathing room. The visitors split time in goal between sophomore Derek Missert and junior Adam Reasoner. Missert started the contest and didn't allow a goal before being replaced by Reasoner with 7:53 remaining in the second period. Reasoner earned the win despite conceding both MIT goals. Freshman goaltender Stephen Yablonski played the full 60 minutes for Tech. Playing in the final regular season home game of their illustrious careers, eight MIT seniors and graduate students were honored over the course of the contest for their contributions to the MIT men's ice hockey program. Seniors Eddie Sturm, Steve Payne, Jeremy Myers and Kozlowski and graduate students Thomas Hopkins, Paul Puskarich, Nicholas Maietta and Brad Holschuh all donned the Cardinal and Gray for the final time in a regular season game at the Johnson Ice Rink. The Engineers will now turn their attention to the NECHA playoffs, which will see them host Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Faceoff for the quarterfinal match-up is tentatively scheduled for 7:00 p.m. |
