Men's Hockey Hails New Season With Heroics In 4-3 Comeback Win

Nov. 3, 2005

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The men's hockey team found themselves down by one goal with 4:11 remaining in Wednesday night's season opener against W.P.I., despite outshooting their opponents 56-22. But freshman forward Nick LaBounty and junior defenseman Nicholas Maietta lit the lamp twice in the final four minutes of the third period to cap MIT's 4-3 comeback victory at Johnson Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, W.P.I got on the board as Nate Roy capitalized on a feed from Andrew McIssac at 11:12. The host Engineers came back five minutes later when senior forward Adam Shabshelowitz scored MIT's first goal of the 2005-06 season. MIT continued to pepper W.P.I. goalie Nate Birmingham with shots from all angles but could not find the back of the net.

With the score still deadlocked at 1-1 over seven minutes into the second frame, MIT's John Bergin began a barrage of scoring. The senior put home his first of the season at 12:05 of the third to give MIT their first lead of the game. The one-goal advantage didn't stand up long, as W.P.I.'s Andrew Biery and Mark Elbay scored 2:46 apart.

Finally with just over four minutes left, MIT's sustained pressure and onslaught of shots on W.P.I. keeper Birmingham paid off. At 4:11, freshman Nick LaBounty beat Birmingham to even the score at three. Freshman Ryan Ballentine and graduate Nic Dulac picked up assists on LaBounty's equalizer. Then with just 2:12 remaining in the third period, Dulac set up his defensive partner Nicholas Maitetta to give MIT the lead for good. W.P.I. coach Jon Abplanalp called a timeout with 42 seconds left in a last ditch effort to send the game to overtime, but Tom Hopkins stood up in net as MIT hung on to win their season opener in dramatic fashion.

Despite the loss, W.P.I. goalie Birmingham was spectacular, as he allowed just four goals on 56 shots. MIT's Tom Hopkins denied 19 of the 22 shots he faced in his first victory of the season. Senior forwards Adam Shabshelowitz and John Bergin both registered a goal and an assist for MIT. Balletine and Dulac also had multi-point efforts, each dishing out two helpers.

MIT travels to Nashua, N.H. on Saturday to face off against Daniel Webster College. The puck is set to drop at 8:20 p.m.
