MIT Dominates Daniel Webster 9-4 With Five Goal Third Period

Nov. 7, 2005

NASHUA, N.H. - The men's hockey team improved to 2-0 on Saturday night after demolishing Daniel Webster College, 9-4. The Engineers were deadlocked with the Eagles at the end of the first and second periods, but freshman forwards Nick LaBounty (four goals) and Ryan Ballentine (one goal, three assists) exploded for a combined eight points in the final 25 minutes to power MIT to the blowout victory.

Daniel Webster College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Pat Moore was set up by Sean Jamieson and Paul Trudel for the goal. The Eagles saw their lead slip away as they took back to back penalties leading to power-play goals by MIT junior Tim Studley at 8:24 and senior Adam Shabshelowitz at 5:56. Sophomore Mike Kozlowski picked up assists on both goals. With 1:23 remaining in the first, Mike Collette of Daniel Webster cashed in on a feed from Paul Trudel to knot the game at 2-2.

The second frame was a highlight show featuring MIT's Nick LaBounty and the Eagles' Sean Jamieson. First it was Jamieson lighting the lamp for Daniel Webster at 17:12. MIT came back when LaBounty tallied the Engineers' third power-play goal of the day at 13:11. Jamieson again gave his team the lead at 10:38, notching his third point of the night, only to watch LaBounty erase the deficit with a shorthanded goal. The score remained deadlocked heading into the third period.

While LaBounty and Jamieson had two goals each at the beginning of the final session, it was MIT's LaBounty who continued to produce down the stretch. The freshman was aided by another first-year forward, linemate Ryan Ballentine. After Kozlowski collected his third assist of the day after feeding junior Nicholas Maietta for the go-ahead goal, Ballentine and LaBounty figured in three straight scores in just over a three-minute span. At 16:24, sophomore Eddie Sturm located Ballentine for a goal to give MIT a 5-3 lead. Then Ballentine dished out passes to LaBounty at 16:08 and 13:07 to pad the Engineers' lead. For good measure, senior forward Adam Was scored MIT's ninth goal of the evening at 11:14.

LaBounty and Ballentine registered four points and Kozlowski tallied three in the game. LaBounty now has five goals and Ballentine has a goal and four assists in two contests. Senior John Bergin, Shabshelowitz and Maietta produced two points each for the Engineers. MIT junior goalie Thomas Hopkins picked up his second win of the season, while Daniel Webster's Andrew Smith suffered the loss.
