MIT Rides Potent Power-Play To 7-0 Pounding Of Bridgewater State

Nov. 10, 2005

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Sophomore Mike Kozlowski scored twice in the first period and once in the second to pace the Engineers' offense that struck three times on the power-play en route to an easy 7-0 win over Bridgewater State on Wednesday night. MIT, now with a three game winning streak to begin the season, recorded a power-play goal in each period. Junior goalie Thomas Hopkins denied all threats from Bridgewater, turning away 29 shots for his first shutout of the young season. On offense, senior Adam Shabshelowitz dished out four assists, and junior Tim Studley recorded two goals and an assist.

Studley opened up the scoring for MIT with is second goal of the season just over two minutes into the contest. Three minutes later, the Engineers found themselves on the power-play and Kozlowski capitalized on the man-advantage for his first goal of the year. But Kozlowski wasn't done, and he beat Bridgewater keeper Dayce Moore with 5:28 left in the first to put MIT up 3-0. Studley and Shabshelowitz each picked up their second point of the night with assists on the play.

Junior defenseman Nick Maietta continued his torrid scoring pace from the blueline with his third goal in as many games at 11:44 of the second. Maietta scored only one goal in the 2004-05 season. With less than five minutes left in the second frame, the Engineers went back to work on the power-play and Kozlowski again lit the lamp after being set up by Shabshelowitz and Maietta. Just over a minute later, Shabshelowitz and Maietta set up Studley for a commanding 6-0 lead. The assist was the fourth of the game for Shabshelowitz and the second for Maietta, who also recorded a goal. Then at 3:08, Bridgewater's Ryan Donohue was called for a five-minute major penalty for cross-checking, sending MIT back on the power-play.

The Engineers carried the power-play into the final frame, and freshman Nick LaBounty put home his team-leading sixth goal of the season with 58 seconds left in the man advantage. There was no scoring the rest of the way out, as Hopkins closed out the game with 29 saves for MIT. Bridgewater's tri-captain goalie Dayce Moore stopped 49 of 56 shots in the loss.

MIT was able to capitalize on three of their nine power-play opportunities, while Bridgewater went a dismal 0-4 with the man advantage. MIT improved to 3-0 with the victory. Bridgewater State fell to 0-4-1 and has now been outscored 16-0 in their last two contests.

The Engineers will look to improve to 4-0 on Saturday when they host Westfield State at 7:00 p.m.
