Engineers Rally Against Westfield To Stay Unbeaten

Nov. 14, 2005

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The men's hockey team looked poised and quicker than their Westfield State opponents right from the opening face-off Saturday night at Johnson Ice Arena. The Engineers came out flying and grabbed a 1-0 lead just a minute and a half into the contest. Westfield State fought back, scoring three unanswered goals, and took a 3-1 lead into the third. MIT senior Adam Shabshelowitz and freshman Nick LaBounty each tallied goals to tie the score. There was no scoring the rest of the way out, as both MIT (3-0-1) and Westfield State (4-0-2) remained unbeaten this season.

MIT controlled the flow of the game early on and rarely allowed Westfield State to gain possession of the puck. At 18:34, senior John Bergin ripped a shot past Westfield goalie Chris Motsis. The Engineers continued to pressure Westfield but to no avail. After withstanding the early onslaught, Westfield finally came to life toward the end of the first period with goals at the 2:11 and 1:05 marks by Liam Powers and Mike Gropman.

Westfield State carried the late first period momentum into the second, as Powers notched his second goal of the game at 14:38. Nick LaBounty cut Westfield's lead in half three minutes later with his team-leading seventh goal of the season. At the end of the second session, the Engineers were still down by one.

Midway through the final frame, senior Adam Shabshelowitz knotted the game at three with his third goal of the year. Neither team could muster enough offense in the remainder of the game, and both teams escaped unbeaten, and with a point in the standings.

Junior goalie Thomas Hopkins stopped 43 of 46 shots he faced, while Westfield keeper Chris Motsis denied 39 of 42. Nick LaBounty figured in all MIT goals, recording a goal and two assists in the contest.

MIT stays home this week and will host the University of New Hampshire Club Team on Wednesday, November 16. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
