Engineers Down University of New England, 4-1
Nov. 16, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Freshman Justin Myers scored his first intercollegiate goal and fellow rookie Stephen Yablonski notched his first intercollegiate win between the pipes, as the Engineers defeated the University of New England, 4-1, in NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA) Conference A East Division action on Friday night in the Johnson Ice Rink. MIT's record remained unblemished at 4-0-0 (3-0-0 NECHA) courtesy of the victory, while the Nor'easters fell to 0-5-1 (0-3-0 NECHA). It's the second consecutive season in which the Cardinal and Gray has started at least 4-0-0, as the 2006-07 squad rattled off five straight victories to begin its campaign. Myers, senior Mike Kozlowski and juniors Ryan Ballentine and Nick LaBounty each recorded one goal and one assist to help pace a balanced Engineers' offense. Ballentine opened the scoring on a power-play at 12:41 of the first period, finding the net courtesy of feeds from LaBounty and Kozlowski. Just over one minute later, it was Kozlowski's turn to score, as he netted the ultimate game-winner with help from Myers and Dustin Kendrick. The strike was the Melrose, Mass., native's second game-winning goal of the season, tying him with sophomore defenseman Kevin Farino for the team lead in that category. Exactly halfway through the second period, Kendrick and Ian Rousseau fed Myers for his first-ever tally, while LaBounty rounded out the scoring for the Engineers at 4:08 of the period with assists credited to Ballentine and Farino. The University of New England, which is maintaining a men's ice hockey program for the first time since the early 1980s, spoiled Yablonski's shutout bid with 8:16 remaining in the final period. The Nor'easters' leading scorer, Chris McCauley, rifled a wrist-shot past the rookie's blocker after taking a pass from Travis Pease. Junior Jon Duhaime was credited with the secondary assist. Yablonski stopped 22 shots in 56:50 of action before making way for junior Andrew Marok, who made two saves in his first ice-time of the season. A courageous 52-save performance from freshman Mike Roper kept the Nor'easters within striking distance for a majority of the game, but the University of New England net-minder was credited with the tough-luck loss. The Engineers will return to the ice following a two-week hiatus, as they will travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30. The Nor'easters won't play again until Saturday, Dec. 1, when they will travel to Hamilton, Mass., to battle Endicott College. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. |
