MIT Manhandled By Endicott, 8-1
Dec. 5, 2005
BEVERLY, Mass. - The men's hockey team (3-2-2) never had a chance against the Endicott College Gulls (9-4-0) on Saturday night. Visiting MIT trailed 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-0 at the end of the second on the way to an 8-1 trouncing. The Engineers have now dropped two straight for the first time this year and are winless (0-2-2) in their last four contests. During that stretch, MIT has been outscored 22-12. Freshman Chris Linnehan, sophomore Chris Garofalo and junior Mike Manfredi led the Gulls with a combined six goals and five assists. Garofalo, who finished the night with a goal and four helpers, opened the scoring for Endicott at 16:29 of the first. The Gulls never looked back from there, as the goal proved to be all they would need. Still, Endicott kept the intensity up, and Linnehan lit the lamp at 12:46 and 4:14 of the first to give the Gulls a 3-0 advantage at the end of the opening period. In the second and third sessions, Endicott's Manfredi took control of the game. After tallying a goal and an assist in the second, Manfredi found the back of the net again at 16:52 of the third frame. Just over three minutes later, the Engineers finally managed to get one past Gulls goalie Jeff Pardue, as freshman Ryan Ballentine capitalized on a feed from junior defenseman Nicholas Maietta. But that was all the offense MIT could manage. Endicott struck again at 8:20 of the third to go up 7-1, and with 58.7 seconds left in the game, Garofalo found Manfredi, who buried his third goal of the game to complete the hat trick. After beginning the season with three wins, MIT has now failed to find the win column in four games. The Engineers will look to reverse that trend when they host Holy Cross on Tuesday night. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start. |
