LaBounty's Shorthanded Goal Lifts MIT Over Bryant, 2-1

Dec. 8, 2007

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Freshman Michael Rosensweig opened the scoring with his first intercollegiate goal and junior Nick LaBounty notched the game-winner while MIT was shorthanded early in the third period, as the Engineers defeated Bryant University, 2-1, in NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA) Conference A East Division action on Friday night at Levy Rink. The win served as a measure of revenge for the Cardinal and Gray, as it was defeated by the Bulldogs, 6-2, in the NECHA Conference A Championship game last season.

The victory improved MIT's record to 6-1-0 overall and a division-best 4-1-0 in the NECHA East as it heads into the winter break, while Bryant fell to 8-7-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the division.

Rosensweig put the Engineers on top, 1-0, with his first intercollegiate goal and point at 6:35 of the opening period courtesy of a Kevin Farino pass. Farino leads all Tech defensemen with two goals and two assists for four points.

The hosts leveled the score at one apiece just under five minutes into the second period, when junior forward Jeremy Link fed fellow junior Joseph Oullette, who directed the puck past MIT goaltender Thomas Hopkins.

However, Tech's penalty-killing unit restored the Engineers' lead with 16:34 remaining in regulation, as LaBounty scored what would prove to be the game-winner. Fellow junior Ryan Ballentine, who leads the team with 12 assists, provided the helper as LaBounty found the back of the net for a team-leading ninth time. The Moose Lake, Minn., native has also notched eight assists to put him atop the MIT scoring charts with 17 points.

Hopkins made 31 saves between the pipes for the Cardinal and Gray, including a crucial 13 in the final period, in which the Engineers were out-shot, 13-5. The veteran net-minder lowered his stellar goals-against-average to 1.20 in the process. Bryant goaltender Joe Marcaurelle stopped 26 shots in defeat.

MIT will not return to action for over a month, as it heads into the winter hiatus having won six of its first seven contests. The Engineers next game will be on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they will host Bridgewater State College at 7:00 p.m. On the other hand, Bryant has a remarkably short turnaround, as it will travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on WPI at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9.
