Wrestlers Find Silver Lining Despite Going 0-3 in Home Quad Match

Jan. 28, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Joe Silverman posted a 3-0 record, including a stunning 4-0 decision over his No. 7 nationally-ranked opponent in Saturday's quad match hosted by MIT. Silverman's exceptional outing was the main bright light for the Engineers, who again wrestled well, despite falling to Norwich University, 36-21, Plymouth State University, 35-19, and event-winner Bridgewater State College, 39-6.

Silverman, at 197 pounds, improved his season ledger to 20-10. While his win over nationally-ranked James Quinlan of Bridgewater State was the highlight of the day, the Cardinal and Gray standout was no less sensational in his 6-0 and 4-2 victories over Norwich's Jordan Ferguson and Plymouth State's Robert Phillips, respectively.

Also starring for MIT were Grant Kadokura and Kenzan Tanabe. Kadokura, at 125-pounds, went 3-0, while upping his season mark to 16-14, while the 141-pound Tanabe went 2-1, improving to 13-15.

The Engineers proved most solid in their match against Norwich in which they won four of five of their action bouts, including three wins by fall. But, because of a small team in numbers and a few injuries to boot, Tech faced its season-long troubles of forfeiting the crucial middle rounds.

Nevertheless, in addition to Silverman's win by decision, Tech received wins by fall from Tanabe, Kadokura, and heavyweight Glenn Geesman against Norwich. MIT followed that with four more wins in five action bout tries against Plymouth State. Heavyweight Sean Jameson and Tanabe won by fall, while Kadokura added a 13-2 decision win to Silverman's victory.

Kadokura and Silverman were the only MIT winners against Bridgewater State.

MIT will compete in a tri-match against Bridgewater State and host Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
