Geesman Brings Down the House, Qualifies for National Wrestling Tourney

Feb. 25, 2008

GORHAM, Maine - Adding another achievement to an already extraordinary campaign, prolific muscleman Glenn Geesman qualified for the Division III national tournament after bringing down the house - literally and figuratively - with five pins to win the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) heavyweight championship this past weekend. Geesman, who hails from Aptos, Calif., will take his nationwide status to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in two weeks, after delivering an almost perfect performance, in which he posted a 6-1 record, including the five wins by fall that give him 21 pins for the season. The junior sensation ranks in the top three in the country in pins in all divisions, while sporting an uncanny 31-5 ledger.

Geesman's title makes him the first New England champion to hail from MIT in 13 years, while his trip to the national tournament will be the first for an Engineer wrestler since Greg Walker qualified in 2002.

With five pins in a total time of 16:46, Geesman earned the star weekend recognition for most falls in least time.

Overall, MIT finished 12th out of 15 teams at the conference meet hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

The Engineers also got solid outings from sophomore Joe Silverman and freshman Grant Kadokura, who each won a match in the 197 and 125 weight classes, respectively.

Rhode Island College won the event with a score of 121.
