After two years as faculty mentor to the MIT men's and women's gymnastics teams, Dr. Gregory Michael Dorr joined both programs as combined faculty mentor/assistant coach in 2007. Before a catastrophic knee injury (ironically incurred during warm-ups for a meet with MIT in 1989) ended his competitive career, Dorr was a three-time Ivy League medalist and captain of the Dartmouth men's gymnastics team, and a former high school All-State and All-County gymnast from Darien, Conn. He has over 15 years experience coaching age-level and collegiate gymnasts in Connecticut and Virginia. Holding a Ph.D. in history, and having taught at the University of Virginia and the University of Alabama, Dorr came to MIT in 2005 as post-doctoral associate in MIT's Center for the Study of Diversity in Science, Technology, and Medicine, where he remains a visiting scholar. His book, Segregation's Science: Eugenics and Society in Virginia, is forthcoming from the University of Virginia Press. He can be reached at: gdorr@mit.edu. |
