Women's Gymnastics Places Fourth at Brown
Jan. 28, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Competing as the only Division III team amidst a field full of Division I and II squads, MIT's women's gymnastics team used a season-high score of 180.600 to finish fourth in a meet at Brown University's Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. Bowling Green State University won the event with a score of 191.475 and was followed by the University of Bridgeport (188.675), Brown (185.825), MIT and West Chester University (174.225). Both Bowling Green and Brown are members of Division I, while Bridgeport and West Chester compete in Division II. With the 1-3 mark on the afternoon, the Engineers' dual meet record moved to 4-5 overall, though only one of those five losses has come at the hands of a Division III opponent. Junior Julia Zimmerman was MIT's highest finisher in the all-around competition, securing fifth-place with a personal season-high mark of 37.900. Senior Sophia Harrison finished seventh (37.225), while junior Laura Kelly placed 11th (34.700). Bowling Green's Breanne Guy recorded a 38.475 to notch first-place. Zimmerman's most impressive performance came on the floor exercise, which she won by nearly a full tenth-of-a-point over runner-up Queenita Gamble of Bowling Green. The defending Division III All-Around National Champion's tally of 9.750 was just 0.025 away from tying the MIT record, which is held jointly by Zimmerman herself (Mar. 23, 2007) and Sonja Ellefson (Feb. 17, 1999). Harrison was also impressive on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.425 to finish 14th, while sophomore Katie Mingo's 9.250 was good enough for 21st. Zimmerman (9.450) and Harrison (9.375) also put forth Tech's top two scores on the vault, while rookie Elizabeth Stavely's 9.150 in the event was solid, as well. The balance beam was no different, with Zimmerman (9.400) and Harrison (8.975) leading the way, though Harrison was closely followed by Mingo (8.925). The dynamic duo swapped finishes on the parallel bars, with Harrison taking home Tech's top score with a mark of 9.450 and Zimmerman tallying a 9.300. The women's gymnastics team will next compete on Saturday, Feb. 2, when it will cross the country to take on Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. The meet is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start time. |
