Women's Gymnastics Impressive Despite Loss to Air Force
Feb. 3, 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Continuing her remarkable run of form in her senior season, MIT women's gymnast Sophia Harrison won the all-around competition with a personal-best score of 38.100 in a dual meet with the United States Air Force Academy on Saturday evening in Colorado Springs. The co-captain's efforts helped the Engineers put forth a season-high team score of 180.950, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Division I Falcons, who scored a 188.100. With the setback, the Cardinal and Gray's record moved to 4-6, though only one of those six losses has come at the hands of a Division III opponent. Meanwhile, Air Force improved to 1-2. Harrison's 38.100 all-around score shattered her previous personal-best mark of 37.875 and was just two-tenths of a point away from matching the Institute record (38.300) set by teammate Julia Zimmerman last year. Zimmerman's tally of 37.375 in Saturday's meet earned her third-place behind Air Force's Abbey Rogers (38.025). Harrison scored highest on all four events for MIT, placing second overall on the floor exercise (9.600), vault (9.550) and beam (9.550), while placing sixth on the uneven bars (9.400). Her scores on floor, vault and beam all represented season-highs. Zimmerman was impressive in finishing third overall on the vault with a score of 9.475, while her 9.050 on the uneven bars was MIT's second-highest tally. The junior grabbed a fourth-place finish on the beam with a mark of 9.450 and was closely followed in fifth by teammate Laura Kelly, who earned a 9.200. Meanwhile, sophomore Katie Mingo's 9.425 on the floor exercise was good enough for a fifth-place finish. Kelly, along with Alison Barnard, Kristen Watkins and Rachel Tatem, all scored at least a 9.125 on the vault. The Engineers will return home for their next two meets, the first of which is a tri-meet featuring Southern Connecticut State University and SUNY Brockport on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m. |
