CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Seniors Sophia Harrison and Sarah Trowbridge went out in style on Saturday afternoon, as the pair finished 1-2 in the all-around competition to lead the MIT women's gymnastics team to a first-place finish in what served as the final meet of their illustrious careers in duPont Gymnasium. Harrison's 36.725 was tops amongst all competitors, while Trowbridge earned runner-up honors with a tally of 35.950, as the Engineers (180.775) topped both Rhode Island College (169.125) and Boston University (139.425).

MIT improved to 6-8 with the two wins, though only two of its eight defeats have come at the hands of Division III opponents.

Harrison earned individual victories on both the vault (9.575) and the bars (9.450) to help pace her fourth all-around victory of the campaign. Remarkably, the Engineers took the top five spots in both events, with Harrison followed by Alison Barnard (9.425), Trowbridge (9.225), Elizabeth Stavely (9.175) and Laura Kelly (9.150) on the vault and Barnard (8.850), Kelly (8.750), Katie Mingo (8.275) and Trowbridge (8.225) on the bars.

Junior Julia Zimmerman - who competed with a brace on her fractured wrist - tied for first-place on both the beam (9.350) and the floor exercise (9.425). Teammate Trowbridge matched her on the beam, while fellow Engineer Mingo shared the victory on the floor.

In addition to Zimmerman's injury, the Cardinal and Gray was without the services of junior Rachel Tatem (fractured shin) and sophomore Marie Heglund (sprained ankle).

While head coach Jen Miller-McEachern was pleased with the entire team for its performance through the rash of injuries, she reserved special praise for her graduating seniors.

"Both Sarah and Sophia were major contributors to the MIT gymnastics program," she said. "But more importantly, these two young women have had an incredible impact on their coaches and have been inspirations to their peers. Their energy, sportsmanship and talent will be greatly missed next year and we are excited to see what the future holds for these two amazing young women."

The Engineers will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 24, when they will travel to Springfield, Mass., to take on Springfield College at 2:00 p.m.
