Women's Gymnastics Defeats Rhode Island College and Boston University

Feb. 19, 2005

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT women's gymnastics enjoyed one of its best performances of the season, scoring 182.250 en route to a victory over Rhode Island College and Boston University, Saturday afternoon at duPont Gymnasium. Merritt Tam scored 36.950 to win the all-around competition, while teammate Ashley Tran totaled 36.750 to finish second overall.

Saturday's victory was truly a team effort for the Engineers, who featured a different winner in every event. Tam's all-around win was paced by a significant victory in the bars, where she scored 9.550. Tran took top honors on the vault (9.425), while Sarah Trowbridge and Chandler Hatton also scored impressive victories for MIT. Trowbridge scored 9.400 to claim the day's best mark on the beam, and Hatton won the floor exercise for the first time in her career after totaling a score of 9.600.

MIT's team score was just off its season-high set at Yale, but was enough to outdistance Rhode Island College (181.125) and the Terriers of Boston University (155.025).
