Women's Gymnastics Falls to Springfield, 185.150-180.575
Feb. 25, 2008
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Without the services of this year's top all-around performer in Division III, Sophia Harrison, and with defending all-around National Champion Julia Zimmerman performing limited routines, MIT's women's gymnastics team entered Sunday afternoon's dual meet at No. 4 Springfield College shorthanded, to say the least. However, a batch of fresh new faces came up with strong performances to help the Engineers garner a team-score of 180.575, although it wasn't enough to overcome the host Pride (185.150). MIT fell to 6-9 with the loss, though only three of its nine defeats have come at the hands of Division III opponents. Senior Sarah Trowbridge was the Cardinal and Gray's top all-around performer, earning an overall mark of 36.225 to finish as the runner-up, just 0.225 points back of the winner, Alexandra Ploenes of Springfield. Junior Laura Kelly was the Engineers' other all-around participant, placing third with a tally of 35.525. Trowbridge won the beam convincingly with a season-high mark of 9.425, besting Ploenes by nearly a full two-tenths-of-a-point. Katie Mingo (9.200) and Zimmerman (9.175) also stuck their routines to help MIT match Springfield's overall score (45.200) in the event. As always, Zimmerman was stellar in her floor exercise, finishing in a tie for second-place with a mark of 9.600. Mingo was also impressive with a score of 9.475, while Kelly (9.175) and Elizabeth Stavely (9.050) also provided the Cardinal and Gray with solid routines. Zimmerman was once again the top Engineer on the parallel bars, tallying a score of 9.250 to place third overall. Alison Barnard (9.300), Becky Stavely (9.275) and Trowbridge (9.200) finished 5-6-7 on the vault to pace MIT in that event. The Cardinal and Gray will hit the road once again on Sunday, Mar. 2, when it will travel to Brockport, N.Y., to face SUNY Brockport at 12:00 p.m. |
