Women's Gymnastics Closes Regular Season at URI Quad-Meet

March 8, 2008

KINGSTON, R.I. - Fresh off of her selection as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Gymnast of the Week, junior Julia Zimmerman was once again impressive in Friday night's quad-meet at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House, finishing the competition with an all-around score of 37.850. However, her efforts weren't enough to prevent the Engineers (177.225) from falling to the host Rams (189.900), Yale University (185.775) and Southern Connecticut State University (182.575).

The quad-meet served as the last regular season event of the campaign for the Cardinal and Gray, which finished its 2008 schedule with a record of 6-15.

Zimmerman's score of 37.850 in the all-around earned her third-place overall behind Yale's Brigitte Kivisto (38.300) and Southern Connecticut's Justine Basley (38.250). The Chicago, Ill., native had MIT's highest marks on the vault (9.550), floor (9.550) and beam (9.475), while she also put forth a respectable tally of 9.275 on the bars.

Vault was by far the Engineers' best event of the evening, with junior Alison Barnard's season-high 9.475 setting the stage for Zimmerman's team-high mark. Freshman Elizabeth Stavely (9.225) and senior Sarah Trowbridge (9.150) also contributed to the vault being MIT's most successful apparatus.

Though Tech struggled overall on the bars, beam and floor, the group was bolstered by the return of senior Sophia Harrison to the lineup in all three events. The co-captain nailed her routine to post a team-best tally of 9.525 on the bars, while she also managed a 9.075 in her floor exercise and an 8.950 on the beam.

With the roster finally on the brink of returning to full health, the Engineers will enter next weekend's ECAC Championships looking for a solid result. The postseason meet will be hosted by Springfield College on Saturday, Mar. 15, at a time to be announced.
