March 25, 2007
WHITEWATER, Wis. - Sophomore Julia Zimmerman was named the 2007 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Beam Champion on Saturday evening, as her 9.700 in the finals was tops amongst all Div. III competitors in the nation. She also placed third in the floor exercise to earn First Team All-America honors, while teammate Sophia Harrison finished 10th in the vault for Second Team All-America accolades. Zimmerman earned her third-place finish in the floor exercise with a 9.500, while she also placed 14th on the vault with an 8.900. Harrison's 10th-place finish was earned with a 9.350. Junior Sarah Trowbridge also competed in the prelims on Friday evening, placing 51st on the beam with an 8.100. Head coach Jen Miller-McEachern was delighted with the performances of her athletes over the course of the weekend, and praised the camaraderie and sportsmanship of the opposition throughout the competition. "The feel of this meet is like no other," she said. "Although the athletes are extremely competitive, they are extremely supportive of one another. The cheers and encouragement for our three athletes were just as loud as they were for the winning team." The competition was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. |
