Sophia Harrison Cops ECAC Honors Once Again
Feb. 7, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second time in the past three weeks, MIT senior Sophia Harrison was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Gymnast of the Week following her highlight-filled performance in a dual meet at the United States Air Force Academy on Feb. 2. The co-captain tied her career-best mark of 9.550 on the vault before setting new career-bests on the beam (9.550) and in the all-around (38.100) en route to a first-place individual finish. Harrison's 38.100 all-around score shattered her previous personal-best mark of 37.875 and was just two-tenths of a point away from matching the Institute record (38.300) set by teammate Julia Zimmerman last year. The score also marked the first time this season that any gymnast in the ECAC topped the coveted tally of 38.000. The Laguna Hills, Calif., native scored highest on all four events for MIT, placing second overall on the floor exercise (9.600), vault and beam, while placing sixth on the uneven bars (9.400). In addition to her career-best marks on the vault and beam, her floor exercise score was also a season-high. Harrison's efforts helped the Engineers put forth a season-high team score of 180.950. |
