Norwich Holds on to Defeat Engineers, 3-1

Feb. 2, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Kelsey Cone posted a goal and an assist in Norwich University's 3-1 victory over MIT in an ECAC East women's ice hockey game on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets, who are in their inaugural season as a varsity program, improved to 7-6-2 overall and 4-5-2 in conference play while the Engineers' record dropped to 0-13-1 on the year and 0-12-1 in ECAC East action.

Cone quickly picked up her first point when she connected on a feed from Tara Mead after 1:41 had expired in the game. Norwich doubled its advantage in the third minute when Sophie Leclerc redirected a pass from Sarah Scardino for what proved to be the game-winning goal. MIT later found itself in a 6-on-4 power-play but it could not convert the opportunity. The Engineers cut their deficit in half at the 11:57 mark when Rachel Longley set up Catherine Harding for the goal. The Cadets' slim 2-1 edge would hold through the first intermission.

In the second stanza, Norwich maintained its offensive pressure as it out-shot MIT, 16-2. The Cadets capped the scoring halfway through the period when Cone found Hilary Davis for an insurance goal. The Engineers had two chances to narrow the gap early in the final period. In a one-on-one situation with Norwich goalie Elisa LaRoche, Lauren Kazmierski sent a shot to the right side of the net which was snagged by LaRoche's glove. Following the ensuing face-off, the Engineers put a shot on goal and there was a scramble for the loose puck which was eventually covered by LaRoche.

In net, Rachel Bowens-Rubin collected 37 saves while LaRoche made 14 saves in her first appearance of the season.

Both teams will continue ECAC East play on the road. MIT will travel to the College of the Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 9 while Norwich will make the trip to Salve Regina University on Sunday, Feb. 3.
