Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Salve Regina, 3-1

Feb. 26, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Gabrielle Gardner and Molly Golden each posted two points as Salve Regina University recorded a 3-1 victory over MIT in ECAC East action on Tuesday night. With the win, the Seahawks improved to 10-13-2 on the year and 9-9-1 in conference play while the Engineers fell to 1-17-2 overall and 1-16-2 in ECAC East action.

Although Salve Regina recorded an 11-4 advantage in shots during the opening period, the game was a scoreless affair at the first intermission. The Seahawks ended the deadlock with a two-player advantage power-play goal after 5:01 elapsed in the second period. After receiving a pass from Krissy Roche, Golden sent the puck to the left side of net to Gardner who redirected it behind MIT goalie Rachel Bowens-Rubin's leg. Salve Regina doubled its margin exactly 4:27 later when Golden and Gardner set up Caitlin Campbell whose strike hit the inside of the right post. The slim edge would hold for the rest of the period despite a 6-on-4 power-play opportunity for MIT.

The Seahawks extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth minute of the final frame. Kristen Cokely and Kendra Andrie found Ally Carr whose shot slid into the right side of the net. The Engineers responded with a barrage of shots, finishing the period with a 14-6 advantage. MIT eventually broke through with 1:40 remaining in the game when Sara John converted feeds from Stephanie Brenman and Barbara McCarragher during a scramble in front of the net. The Engineers continued to attack, but Salve Regina netminder Lauren Barella prevented the hosts from getting any closer.

Bowens-Rubin closed out the game with 23 saves while Barella finished with 26 stops.

Both teams will compete in the ECAC East Championship Tournament beginning Saturday, March 1. Making its first post-season appearance in five years, No. 8-seeded MIT will travel to No. 1 Manhattanville College. No. 5 Salve Regina will continue its season at No. 4 Norwich University.
