MIT Opens Season With 3-2 Win Over New England College
Nov. 14, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stephanie Brenman provided the game winner just over one minute into the final period to help lift the MIT women’s ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over New England College in an ECAC East contest Friday night at the Johnson Ice Rink. Head coach Rick Chrusciel picked up the win in his debut behind the bench for the Engineers (1-0-0), who bested the Pilgrims (1-4-0) for the first time in nine meetings between the two teams. After skating to a stalemate for most of the first period, sophomore Connie Lu gave Tech the early lead, putting home a pass from Clarion Hess with just under one minute to go in the frame. Kameron Klauber also assisted on the play, picking up one of her two points of the night. New England College struck back midway through the second, as Stefanie Lewis found the back of the net with help from Danielle O’Leary. The Pilgrims would take the lead just over nine minutes later when Kaleigh Costello scored her first goal of the season on assists from Sarah Graham and Jaime Collins. The Engineers did not wait long in the final period to change the course of the game. Klauber evened the score just 47 seconds into the third on a feed from Lu, setting the stage for Brenman’s heroics just 15 seconds later. Lauren Kazmierski threaded a perfect pass to the senior captain who was perched in front of the net. Brenman was able to push the shot home past NEC goaltender Teraysa White for the eventual clincher. MIT withstood the Pilgrims’ late rally attempts, including a pair of penalty kills in the final 20 minutes, to secure the season opening win. MIT goaltender Rachel Bowens-Rubin was spectacular in net, stopping 31 shots en route to the victory. White made 16 saves in the losing effort. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power-play, with MIT going scoreless in one opportunity. NEC was 0 for four with the man advantage. The Engineers will look to improve on tonight’s effort when they host Saint Anselm College tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. New England travels to Saint Michael’s College for a 3:00 p.m. game tomorrow as well. |
