MIT Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Saint Anselm

Nov. 15, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Kameron Klauber recorded her first career hat-trick, including a pair of unassisted goals, but it was not enough as Saint Anselm held on for a 5-3 win over MIT in ECAC East hockey action Saturday afternoon. The Engineers (1-1-0) lost for the first time on the young season while the Hawks improved to 4-0-0.

Saint Anselm opened up an early lead, scoring three times in the first period. Samantha Rowe put the visiting Hawks on the board just over eight minutes into the game with assists from Bianca DeSantis and Molly Corl. The Engineers looked like they would be able to escape the first without more damage until Kelsey Johnson tallied a pair of goals in the final 1:19 to extend the visitors’ lead heading into the locker room.

Klauber opened the scoring for Tech early in the second on a pass from Jessica Hammond. Saint Anselm struck back 10 minutes later as Aly Zappen found Cierra Romaldo for what would prove to be the game winner.

In the third, Klauber almost single-handedly put MIT back in the game, scoring a pair of unassisted goals less than two minutes apart to complete her hat-trick and slice the Saint Anselm lead to just one. A late power-play goal from Chelsea Fillingim would dash the Engineers’ hopes for an upset and seal the victory for the Hawks.

MIT goaltender Rachel Bowens-Rubin had a busy night between the pipes stopping 46 of the 51 shots she faced. Carley Berry picked up her second win of the season for Saint Anselm, making 21 saves.

The power-play once again proved fruitless for the Cardinal and Gray, as they went 0 for four on the night. Saint Anselm did capitalize on two of its seven man advantages.

The Engineers will look to rebound next weekend when they travel to Salve Regina on Saturday, November 22 at 5:00 p.m. Saint Anselm will be back in action on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. at UMass-Boston.
