RYE, N.Y. – One day after falling at Salve Regina in their road opener, the MIT women's ice hockey team fell behind early before losing to Manhattanville, 8-0, in ECAC East play on Sunday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino.

Manhattanville went 1-for-5 on the power play against the Engineers, but still leads the nation with a 40.5 percent success rate (15-of-37) with the man advantage. And with their third consecutive game of eight goals or more, the Valiants enhanced the best scoring offense in all of women’s hockey (all divisions) at 6.20 goals per game.

Linemates Shannon Coffey, Alex Blackwell and Holly Nonis each posted three-point nights against MIT, as wingers Coffey and Blackwell each scored twice with an assist while center Nonis set a new career best with three helpers.

Junior Monique Rafferty also had a pair of goals for the Valiants, while senior Erin Brawley played well with a goal and an assist from the blue line.

Manhattanville was in control from the very beginning against the undermanned Engineers, who only dressed 11 skaters and one goaltender. The Valiants finished the game with a 37-8 edge in shots on goal, including a 20-3 advantage in the final two periods.

Blackwell began the scoring midway through the first period, as she corralled the rebound of a Nonis shot and beat MIT netminder Rachel Bowens-Rubin high at the 9:38 mark.

The lead increased to two on the power play, as some nice puck movement resulted in the team’s lone man-up tally of the day. Senior Alex Findlay passed from the slot to classmate Natalie Zitek down low, and Zitek sent a perfect feed across the crease to a waiting Rafferty for an easy tap-in tally at the right post.

The scoring continued in the second period, as Brawley and junior Sarah Fullerton each recorded their first goals of the season midway through the frame. Rafferty closed the scoring with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period, with assists to Coffey and sophomore Michelle Kaufman.

Senior netminder Karine Turmel earned the win by making seven saves in the first two periods of play before ceding the net to freshman Kimmy Flanders, who made one save in 20 minutes in her first collegiate action. Bowens-Rubin stopped 29 of 37 shots for the Engineers in a losing effort.

Manhattanville (4-1, 4-1 ECAC East) will embark on a five-game road trip to conclude the 2008 calendar year, beginning with a Tuesday night matchup at Salve Regina University at 7:10 p.m. MIT (1-3, 1-3 ECAC East) will host the College of the Holy Cross Thursday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m.
