Women's Tennis Falls to Tufts, 8-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season following an 8-1 loss to Tufts University on Thursday. Leslie Hansen picked up the only win of the day for the Engineers (3-1) with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 decision over Meghan McCooey in the No. 1 singles slot. In doubles play, Liz Denys and Anisa McCree fell by an 8-2 margin in the No. 2 spot while Karina Pikhart and Melissa Diskin were defeated, 8-3. The top tandem of Hansen and Mariah Hoover lost a hard-fought battle to Andrea Cenko and Julia Browne, 9-8 (7). Hoover dropped her No. 3 singles match, 6-3, 6-0, as Pikhart fell, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 6 slot. Yi Wang was edged out by Erica Miller, 6-2, 6-4, while Browne outlasted Denys, 6-2, 5-7, 10-5. Diskin was defeated by Maria Homma, 7-5, 6-4, before Hansen denied the Jumbos a shutout. Jenny Dohlman registered the lone exhibition win for MIT as she defeated Meghan Gentzler, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Teamed up with Emily Onufer, Katie Smyth lost her doubles match, 8-4, and the fell in her singles appearance, 6-3, 6-2. Tufts University vs. MIT Doubles Singles |
